September Education Moves the Mission Moment – Health Career Pathways

The Colorado Plateau Center for Health Professions (CPCHP), North Country HealthCare’s Education Division, offers health career exploration programs and scholarships supporting low-income students.

Inspired by Health Scholarship: Empowering the Next Generation of Healthcare Leaders

The Inspired by Health Scholarship is a $3,500 opportunity designed to support high school students in northern Arizona who are passionate about pursuing careers in healthcare or public health. The scholarship is funded by the Direct Relief Fund for Health Equity.

To be eligible, students must:

  • Be high school students on track to graduate and attend college.
  • Reside in Northern Arizona.
  • Be enrolled in, or planning to enroll in, a two- or four-year post-secondary academic program with the intent to pursue a healthcare or public health career.
  • Have successfully completed at least one of the following programs through the Colorado Plateau Center for Health Professions (CPCHP) between 2023–2025:
    • Future Faces of Family Medicine (FFFM)
    • Tuba City Regional Health Care Corp High School Exploration Program (TCRHCC-HSEP)
    • Indigenous Pride Health Workers (IPHW)
    • Health Career Exploration Camp (HCE)

As of September 2025, seven students have been awarded scholarships, with five more applications pending.

Future Faces of Family Medicine (FFFM)

This mentorship program connects high school students with resident physicians from the CPCHP Family and Community Residency Program. Students participate in weekly sessions featuring: Workshops on suturing, ultrasound, and heart dissection, panels with healthcare professionals across diverse specialties, post-secondary education and financial aid guidance, and a final research project and poster presentation. FFFM helps students gain both technical knowledge and a deeper understanding of the many roles within healthcare, inspiring many to take their first serious steps toward a medical career.

Indigenous Pride Health Workers (IPHW)

Developed by the Hopi Health Care Center, this 7-week summer program supports Hopi youth in exploring health professions while emphasizing community wellness. Participants engage in: Job shadowing at local healthcare facilities, Health fairs and research projects, a residential camp experience at Northern Arizona University (NAU) supported by CPCHP that include (Dorm living, CPR certification, College tours and simulation lab visits, team-building activities). Overall, IPHW is a culturally rooted initiative that uplifts Indigenous youth by giving them the tools and exposure they need to thrive in health-related fields.

Tuba City Regional Health Care High School Exploration Program (TCRHCC-HSEP)

Hosted at Tuba City Regional Health Care, this 4-week summer program combines clinical shadowing and mentorship with a residential camp at NAU (where students earn CPR certification, engage in research and presentations, explore undergraduate programs and financial aid, and participate in team-building activities).  Overall, this program provides a valuable glimpse into real-life healthcare settings, giving students confidence and clarity about their future career paths.
